The majority of the responses indicate that the only possible problem may be a slowdown in AV which can be avoided by excluding the AV directory/files from Norton's scan. Bradley Rawlings and David Stinchcomb said they have had no problems with Norton 2000 (regular edition) and AV 3.1. Mickey Hayden, Steven Howell, Dave Hoehne, Mary Howes, Eric Josephson, Clifford Cook and Mike Lent all reported using Norton Corporate Edition with AV 3.1 and/or 3.2a on Windows NT 4.0 and/or Windows 2000 with little or no problems. Mike stated that the problems he had with the regular Norton went away when he switched to CE. I have posted the responses from Eric and Cliff as the solution to avoiding any slowdowns in AV due to Norton CE: Eric wrote: "We ran into problems running ArcView and Norton Corporate edition when Norton was set to scan every file moving across the network. The meant the huge amounts of GIS data were being scanned every time the map frame changed or we tried to pan and zoom, which ground things pretty much to a halt. We changed the settings on Norton to a less restrictive setting, and everything seems to work fine now." Cliff wrote "We switched to Norton Corporate recently. As for ArcView itself, so far so good. One big hitch at the beginning - our somewhat clueless Network Admin set up Corporate Edition to scan every file moved over the LAN/WAN, including those from our own servers being served to desktop PCs and workstations. Everything slowed to crawl until I complained along with the Police Dept. Once Norton Corporate was changed only to scan downloaded files from the Net, email and disk drives the problem disappeared. Maybe it helped that the cops have guns." AH HAH! As a disclaimer, I must pass along the warning that many gave me regarding the exclusion of any directories/files from an antivirus scan. Needless to say, you will have a weakness in your defenses.
